American Red Cross Lifeguard Training

The objective of Lifeguard Training is to teach participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drownings and injuries. Upon successful completion, participants will be issued a 3 year certification in Lifeguarding and First Aid and a 1 year certification in CPR/AED for Lifeguards.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 15.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously.
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

American Red Cross Lifeguard Review

The objective of a Lifeguard Review is to review and practice the material learned in Lifeguard Training in order to be recertified for three years in Lifeguarding and First Aid and one year in CPR/AED for Lifeguards.

Prerequisites:

  • Participants must have a current or recently expired (less than one year) American Red Cross Lifeguarding certification.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously.
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7–10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Training

The objective of Water Safety Instructor Training is to train instructor candidates to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 16.
  • Swim 25 yards of Front Crawl, Back Crawl, Breaststroke, Elementary Backstroke, Sidestroke, and Butterfly.
  • Maintain a back float in deep water for one minute.
  • Tread water for one minute.
