Become an Outdoor Leader

Outdoor Adventures has many excellent opportunities for Tulane University students as both participants and leaders within our outdoor trip program. All of our trips are led by students who receive life-long leadership and communication skills through outdoor recreation trainings and trip leading experiences. Outdoor Adventures encourages friendly and responsible students who maintain an active interest in the outdoor adventure recreation to apply for a position.  These individuals should possess a solid background in outdoor adventure and display strong leadership qualities. Trip Leaders act as drivers, risk managers, skill instructors, educators, and guides alongside and independent of the Assistant Director of Outdoor Adventures.

Required knowledge, skills, values, and competencies.

  • Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license, and must meet Tulane University Motor Vehicle Policy criteria to become an authorized driver of University vehicles.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Must have at least 3 full semesters left at Tulane at the time of hiring.
  • Must have respect for nature and maintaining the pristine qualities of wild places.
  • Current CPR and First Aid or willingness to achieve certification.
  • Must possess a mindset of perpetual learning and value continuing education.
  • Enough free weekends during the semester and/or summer to attend required staff trainings and work multiple weekend trips.

Preferred knowledge, skills, values, and competencies.

  • Personal alignment with Leave No Trace values.  Live, behave, and teach these principles throughout your daily life.
  • Wilderness First Responder certification.
  • Documented leadership experience.
  • Experience managing group logistics involving food, travel, outdoor activities, or related fields.
  • Personal or institutional experience in outdoor adventure activities such as backpacking, rock climbing, paddling, caving, mountain biking, etc.

Outdoor Adventures holds interviews when positions are available during the end of each semester. Fill out the Trip Leader Application below and contact the Assistant Director of Outdoor Recreation for more information. All applicants are required to attend the Trip Leader Training Trip at the beginning of the semester as well as other periodic trainings and events.

Application Deadline:  Position is currently full, but applications are still accepted

Outdoor Leader Interview Dates:  Rolling basis

Outdoor Leader Course: Spring Semester, Fridays from 1-4 pm

After an initial interview, you will be asked to attend the Outdoor Leader Course. To be considered for hiring, you must complete this entire course.
