Fall 2018 Trips

Please note that the registration deadline is the Wednesday before the trip leaves at 5 pm. Trips are subject to change so check back often for updates.

Bayou St. John Historical Paddle
Bayou St. John is the historic bayou that runs from Lake Pontchartrain, alongside City Park into Mid-City. Historically, Bayou St. John is the reason that the French decided in the early 1700s to locate New Orleans at what is now the French Quarter. Our paddle will last approximately 2 hours with stops along the way to learn about the architecture and history along the waterway. We’ll finish up with a Po’ boy at the famed Parkway Bakery and Tavern, a mid-city favorite! Cost includes all activity fees, transportation and meal.

Tubing
Join us for a relaxing float down the picturesque Bogue Chitto River! Drift along the banks, and take in the natural beauty that the south has to offer, while the current effortlessly carries you through this beautiful and remote feeling section of southern Mississippi. Trip includes transportation, tubes, and lunch.

Beach Camping
Join TU Rec Outdoor Adventures for our popular beach camping adventure to Grand Isle. We will camp right on the sand, hike along a beautiful gulf shore barrier island, relax on the beach, and try stand-up paddleboarding. Trip cost includes food, transportation, activity fees, equipment, and leadership.

Date: Friday, September 7 – Sunday, September 9
Time: Overnight – departing Friday afternoon, returning Sunday afternoon

Tunica Falls Hike
Tunica Falls hosts some of the most scenic and beautiful hikes accessible by day trip from New Orleans. Compared to the rest of the region, Tunica Falls is topographically unique, and is considered to be the closest you can get to canyoneering in the south. Comprising over 2,000 acres, this pristine area has over 40 waterfalls that range from 10 to over 25 ft. high. We’ll hike along the riverbed, spend some time cooling off in the falls, and eat lunch on the trail.  Trip cost includes food, transportation, and leadership.

Northlake Nature Center Hike
In need of an afternoon outside? Join Outdoor Adventures as we explore the trails of Louisiana’s Northlake Nature Center. Full of local vegetation like Spanish moss, this conservancy is also recognized for its amazing bird sightings. This trip is a perfect way to stretch your legs and experience the Louisiana wilderness. Trip cost includes transportation and leadership.

Okatoma Kayak and Camp
Join us for an awesome overnight Kayak trip in Mississippi’s beautiful Okatoma Creek! We will explore the area on kayaks, cook dinner, camp, and return to campus on Sunday. Cost includes transportation, food, equipment, instruction, and leadership.

Work/Play Service Day
Get your boots on the ground at this Work/Play Service day.  The work portion might include clearing trails, cleaning trash from the bayou, or general garden maintenance, ending at noon.  Then you’ll have lunch and an opportunity to canoe on the beautiful Bayou Lacombe. A perfect way to get outdoors, meet new people, and make a difference!  Equipment, transportation, and lunch is included.

Moonlight Canoe
Join us for a paddle by moonlight on the historic Bayou St. John. We will paddle through New Orleans with only the full moon as our light. Cost includes transportation, equipment, and leadership.

Intro to Stand Up Paddleboarding
This sport’s origins stem from Hawaii, however, it certainly has caught on here on the Mainland. Paddleboarding combines balance and strength to create a truly unique form of transportation and of course, recreation. We’ll give it a whirl on the waters of Bayou St. John—great for both its natural beauty and iconic New Orleans views. Cost includes transportation, leadership, and equipment.

Barataria Hike
A canopy of Spanish moss that drapes over a wildlife-inhabited swamp, the Barataria Preserve is a fairy tale land of green that provides a glance into the quintessential wetlands of Southern Louisiana. The preserve’s 23,000 acres include marshes, forests, meadows, 200 species of birds, and, most notably, alligators who love to sunbathe right off the path (but don’t worry, they won’t bother us!). We will spend the afternoon hiking the boardwalks and dirt trails that wind through this park. This trip is perfect for anyone who wants to get outside, have tons of fun, and explore the local wilderness!

Black Creek Canoe and Camp
Join us for an awesome overnight canoe trip in Mississippi’s beautiful Black Creek! We will explore the area by canoe, cook dinner, then camp on a sandbar. Cost includes transportation, food, equipment, instruction, and leadership.

Tammany Trace Bike Ride
Once a railroad, the St Tammany Trace is a 28-mile corridor that connects communities on the Northshore of New Orleans.  We’ll bike the trace through lush woods that form a canopy overhead, crossing bridges that were once railroad trestles.  The reuse of these original trestles has made the Trace a right-of-way into a wildlife conservation corridor that links isolated parks, creates greenways and preserves wetlands.  Trip cost includes transportation, bike rental, and leadership.

Fall Break Backpacking
Get outside this Fall Break! Join TU Rec Outdoor Adventures to go backpacking with the experts! On this trip, you will learn how to live minimally, pack living essentials into a backpack, cook tasty food, and live life on the trail. A physical and mental challenge as well as a chance to bond with peers, this trip will be a fulfilling retreat from the bustle of New Orleans. Trip cost includes transportation, backcountry meals, equipment, instruction, and leadership.

Time: Overnight – Departing Wednesday afternoon, returning Sunday afternoon

Fall Break Rock Climbing and Caving
Join Tulane Outdoor Adventures for an exciting and relaxing fall break away from campus. We will spend two days climbing unique sandstone pinnacles and a day exploring a cave while looking for the underground waterfall! Expect to sleep outside, cook on a camp-stove, and get muddy scrambling through the cave. There is no experience necessary for this trip! Cost includes transportation, meals, equipment, and activity fees.

Ocean Stand Up Paddleboarding
This sport’s origins stem from Hawaii, however, it certainly has caught on here on the Mainland. Paddleboarding combines balance and strength to create a truly unique form of transportation and of course, recreation. Paddleboarding has gained momentum as one of the hottest sports in the country. We will head down to Bay St. Louis and try it out in the Gulf of Mexico. There will be plenty of time for paddling, laying in the sun, and enjoying the day. Cost includes transportation, equipment, and lunch.

Intro to Backpacking
Always wanted to go backpacking, but were too nervous to try it alone? Join TU Rec Outdoor Adventures to learn from the experts at beautiful Chicot State Park! On this trip, you will learn how to live minimally, pack living essentials into a backpack, cook tasty food, and live life on the trail. Going to sleep under the stars and waking up to the sun shining through the trees of Chico state park’s bottom-land hardwood forest surely won’t fail to remind you of nature’s beauty.  Trip cost includes transportation, backcountry meals, equipment, instruction, and leadership.

Canoe the Bayou
Canoeing is one of the best forms of transportation in the Louisiana swampland and is now a popular form of recreation. We’ll give it a whirl on the waters of Bayou St. John. Come prepared to get a little wet and have a lot of fun. Cost includes transportation, leadership, and all equipment.

Sunset Canoe
Join Outdoor Adventures for a paddle down the Cane Bayou at sunset. Under the sky’s gradient of bursting color, we will voyage through Southern Louisiana’s wild wetlands to Lake Pontchartrain. What’s a better way to end a weekend than with a sunset over a lake, numerous bird species, and, perhaps, an alligator or two? Cost includes transportation, equipment, and snacks!

Fontainebleau Hike
We will be hiking at Fontainebleau State Park located on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain! We will hike around for a few hours to explore this beautiful area. You will see many interesting plants and animals on our hike along Bayou Cane including cypress and gum trees, snakes, birds, and maybe even an alligator. Cost includes transportation, entry fees, and leadership.

General Trip Information

  • Trips are open to Tulane students only (undergraduate, graduate, medical, and law).
  • No alcohol, drugs, or other substances are permitted on trips.
  • Students must abide by the Student Code of Conduct
  • Attendance at the pre-trip meeting (usually the Wednesday before the trip) is mandatory.
  • Ask any questions you might have about your ability to participate in trip activities before you register. While our trips are geared towards beginners, it is up to you to estimate your physical abilities in advance.
  • Trip sign-up is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Full payment is due at the time of registration.
  • Proof of health insurance is required before trip begins.

Refund Information

  • I understand that by registering for a trip, I am committed to attend.
  • If the trip is canceled by Tulane Reily Student Recreation Center, I will receive a 100% refund.
  • I understand that if I cancel my registration anytime prior to the registration deadline, I will receive a 50% refund of the registration cost.
  • If I cancel after the registration deadline and my spot can not be filled I will not receive a refund.
  • Attendance at the pre-trip meeting is mandatory. Those who do not attend may not be able to attend the trip and may not be given a refund.
