Spring 2017 Trips

Please note that the registration deadline is the Wednesday before the trip leaves at 5 pm. Trips are subject to change so check back often for updates.

Tunica Falls Day Hike
Tunica Falls hosts some of the most scenic and beautiful hikes accessible by day trip from New Orleans. Compared to the rest of the region, Tunica Falls is topographically unique, and is considered to be the closest you can get to canyoneering in the south. Comprising over 2,000 acres, this pristine area has over 40 waterfalls that range from 10 to over 25 ft. high. If you love to get wet and need some more topography in your life, come on out for a day of hiking and waterfall adventures!

Intro to Stand-Up Paddleboarding
This sport’s origins stem from Hawaii, however, it certainly has caught on here on the Mainland. Paddleboarding combines balance and strength to create a truly unique form of transportation and of course, recreation. Paddleboarding has gained momentum as one of the hottest sports in the country. We’ll give it a whirl on the waters of Bayou St. John. Come prepared to get a little wet and have a lot of fun. Cost includes transportation, leadership, and all activity fees.

Intro to Backpacking
Always wanted to go backpacking, but were too nervous to try it alone? Join TU Rec Outdoor Adventures to learn from the experts at beautiful Chicot State Park! On this trip, you will learn how to live minimally, pack living essentials into a backpack, cook tasty food, and live life on the trail. Trip cost includes transportation, food, equipment, instruction, and leadership.

Date: Saturday, February 4– Sunday, February 5
Time: Overnight – Departing Early Saturday Morning
Mandatory Pre-trip Meeting: Wednesday, February 1, 5 pm

Barataria Preserve Hike
The Barataria Preserve is one of Louisiana’s wild wetlands. The preserve’s 23,000 acres include bayous, swamps, marshes, forests, alligators, nutrias, and over 200 species of birds. We will hike the boardwalks and dirt trails that wind through this park. This trip is perfect for anyone who wants to get outside, have tons of fun, and explore the Louisiana wilderness!

Alabama Rock Climbing
Join us for an exciting and relaxing weekend away from campus! We will depart Friday afternoon, climb all day Saturday and Sunday morning, and drive home Sunday afternoon. You should expect tent camping, outdoor cooking, and some incredible climbing. Climbers of all skill levels are welcome, especially beginners. Cost includes transportation, meals, equipment, and activity fees.

Service Day
Are you passionate about America’s wetlands, and want to assist in their upkeep and restoration? Come help the Friends of Louisiana Wildlife Refuges, along with a host of other volunteers, cleanup and restore the Southeast Louisiana National Wildlife Refuges Complex in Lacombe, Louisiana. Volunteers will work on trail and garden maintenance throughout the property, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the wetland ecosystem, and contribute to the overall beatification of the park. After a morning of work, lunch will be provided followed by a canoe outing on Bayou Lacombe. If you are passionate about the wetland ecosystem, love the outdoors, and don’t mind getting your hands dirty, this is the trip for you!

Moonlight Paddle
Located northwest of New Orleans, the Manchac Wetland is a true swamp consisting of hundreds of acres of cypress trees and freshwater marshes. Foot travel is nearly impossible as the land is neither permanently dry nor flooded. Luckily for us, the ancient bayou can be accessed by canoe and is particularly scenic at night. On our twilight paddle, we’ll encounter a variety of wildlife and learn the unique features of this wetland. Cost includes transportation, equipment, and leadership.

Fontainebleau Hike
Join TU Rec Outdoor Adventures for a day trip to Fontainebleau State Park located on the North Shore of Lake Pontchartrain! We will hike around for a few hours to explore this beautiful area. You will see many interesting plants and animals on our hikes along Bayou Cane including cypress and gum trees, snakes, birds, and maybe even an alligator. This trip is perfect for anyone who wants to get outside, have tons of fun, and explore the Louisiana wilderness!

Spring Break Rock Climbing
Arkansas – The Natural State! Ever wonder how they earned that nickname? Join us for a week of camping and climbing at the world famous Horseshoe Canyon Ranch!
We will Drive up on Sunday, climb Monday through Thursday, and return to New Orleans on Friday. Trip cost includes transportation, food, equipment, instruction, and leadership. Beginners are welcome!

Spring Break Backpacking
Arkansas – The Natural State! Ever wonder how they earned that nickname? Immerse yourself in Arkansas’ natural beauty on our Spring Break backpacking trip! On this trip, you will learn how to live minimally, pack living essentials into a backpack, cook tasty food, and live life on the trail. We will be hiking the Eagle Rock Loop Trail, the longest and most challenging loop trail in Arkansas! Backpackers must be physically fit and provide their own footwear (sturdy hiking boots). Trip cost includes transportation, food, equipment, instruction, and leadership. Beginners are welcome!

Caving
Join TU Rec Outdoor Adventures for this awesome caving trip! We will be gone the whole weekend and will spend a few hours exploring the cave with flashlights while looking for the underground waterfall! Expect to sleep outside, cook on a camp-stove, and to get dirty and muddy scrambling through the cave! Cost includes transportation, meals, equipment, and activity fees. No prior experience necessary.

Beach Camping Adventure
Join TU Rec Outdoor Adventures for our popular beach camping adventure to Perdido Key on the Florida Gulf shore. We will camp out, hike along a beautiful gulf shore barrier island, relax on the beach, and try stand-up paddleboarding. Trip cost includes food, transportation, activity fees, equipment, and leadership.

General Trip Information

  • Trips are open to Tulane students only (undergraduate, graduate, medical, and law).
  • No alcohol, drugs, or other substances are permitted on trips.
  • Students must abide by the Student Code of Conduct
  • Attendance at the pre-trip meeting (usually the Wednesday before the trip) is mandatory.
  • Ask any questions you might have about your ability to participate in trip activities before you register. While our trips are geared towards beginners, it is up to you to estimate your physical abilities in advance.
  • Trip sign-up is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Full payment is due at the time of registration.
  • Proof of health insurance is required before trip begins.

Refund Information

  • I understand that by registering for a trip, I am committed to attend.
  • If the trip is canceled by Tulane Reily Student Recreation Center, I will receive a 100% refund.
  • I understand that if I cancel my registration anytime prior to the registration deadline, I will receive a 50% refund of the registration cost.
  • If I cancel after the registration deadline and my spot can not be filled I will not receive a refund.
  • Attendance at the pre-trip meeting is mandatory. Those who do not attend may not be able to attend the trip and may not be given a refund.
