American Red Cross Training

Lifeguard Training

Participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. Upon successful completion, participants will be certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Healthcare Providers for two years.

Members: $275.00
Non-Members: $325.00

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 15
  • Swim 300 yards continuously
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only your legs
  • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using Front Crawl or Breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with two hands on the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute and 40 seconds.

Lifeguard Review

Participants will review the content of the Lifeguard Training program in order to be re-certified in Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Healthcare Providers for two years.

Members: $160.00
Non-Members: $180.00

  • Current certification in Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED

Water Safety Instructor Training

Tulane University Department of Campus Recreation, the American Red Cross, and the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation are offering the annual Ashley Kelly Program which provides free Water Safety Instructor training for candidates who will teach free swim lessons to community members as part of their curriculum.

Participants will learn to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn to Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics. Upon successful completion, participants will earn a Water Safety Instructor certification from the American Red Cross which is valid for two years.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 16
  • Demonstrate the ability to swim the following strokes: Front crawl – 25 yards, Back crawl – 25 yards, Breaststroke – 25 yards
  • Maintain a back float for one minute and tread water for one minute

Lifeguard Instructor Training

The Lifeguarding Instructor (LGI) course trains instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross student-level courses including Lifeguarding, Waterpark Skills, and CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers.

Prerequisites:

  • Minimum age of 17
  • Candidates must show American Red Cross lifeguarding certification and professional-rescuer CPR/AED certification, both of which must be current (not expired) as of the first day of the instructor class
  • This instructor course does not teach student-level lifeguarding skills and knowledge; participants must come to class already knowing student-level lifeguarding content.
